Answer Engine Optimization & SEO

If your website is an island, SEO was the decade you spent making it easy to reach once a buyer set sail toward you. Then the buyer stopped sailing. They ask an engine where to dock, and the engine answers in one breath, naming a source or two. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of being one of those sources. Here is the part the pitch decks leave out: it is not a new craft. It is the snippet discipline you already built, grown up.

84%

of AI citations trace back to earned media, not your own site (Muck Rack, 2026)

AEO is not a second discipline bolted onto SEO. It is what SEO became when the answer replaced the list of ten blue links. Most of the on-page work is identical to the snippet work you already do; the one genuinely new muscle is off-page, and it is the muscle that decides who the engine actually names.

That framing matters because it changes what you have to buy. You are being sold answer engine optimization as a fresh budget line, a second invoice for a second skill. But the page that earned you a featured snippet was already speaking the engine’s language. What changed is not the craft in your hands. It is who is listening, where they are, and what it now takes to be the one they quote.

What follows is what carries straight over, the single new thing that does not, and how to run the two as one effort instead of paying twice for the same authority.

What the numbers say

Two figures explain why the overlap is real, and why one half of the work is the half most brands skip.

genuinely new muscle: off-page corroboration

Everything else is the snippet craft you already built.

What carries over from SEO?

What carries over

More than the vendors selling you AEO would like you to believe. The craft you built for search transfers almost intact.

The same habit

More than the vendors selling you AEO would like you to believe. Google spent a decade teaching the web one habit: pose the question, answer it cleanly in a sentence or two, then elaborate. That habit earned featured snippets. It is also, almost exactly, what an answer engine rewards with a citation. When Perplexity or Google AI Overviews builds a response, it is doing a richer version of what the snippet algorithm did, except it quotes you inside a synthesized answer instead of boxing your text at the top of the page.

Your back catalogue

So the brand that chased position zero for years is not starting from nothing. It has a back catalogue. Every page you formatted for a snippet is a page already most of the way to being quotable. You trained the skill under an old name; the engine simply asks for it under a new one.

The room just doubled

And the audience for that skill moved fast. By early 2026, most B2B software buyers were starting their research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from under a third a year earlier. The snippet you optimized still exists. The room it lives in just doubled, and half of it is somewhere your rankings dashboard cannot see.

The format you already write

One repeatable shape, applied section by section. If you have ever built a page to win a snippet, you have built this before. The only change is that you now write it knowing two judges are reading.

STEP 1

A question-style heading

Phrase the H2 as the question a buyer would actually type or speak. It matches the query a snippet box pulls from and the prompt an answer engine receives. One heading, two doors.

STEP 2

A direct answer in the first sentence or two

Put the answer immediately under the heading, before any elaboration. This is the single habit that does the most for you here, and there is a reason it matters more now than it did for snippets. Roughly 44% of the citations one large study of ChatGPT pulled came from the first third of the page. The engine reads the top and rarely digs. Bury the answer three paragraphs down and a snippet might still find it; an answer engine usually will not.

STEP 3

Named evidence underneath

Back the answer with a statistic and a source you name. Google has long trusted cited claims for snippets, and engines quote evidence-backed passages more readily than bare assertions. The habit that made your pages credible to a ranking algorithm makes them quotable to a generative one. Same paragraph, two payoffs.

The new muscle: corroboration

Here is where the inheritance runs out, and it is the one part worth paying real attention to. For a featured snippet, your own well-formatted page could win the slot more or less alone. For an AI citation, it usually cannot.

The engine weighs what other people say about you more heavily than what you say about yourself. By recent counts of millions of AI citations, around 84% trace back to earned media rather than the brand’s own domain.

It is slower than a content brief, it cannot be bought outright the way a snippet fix can be shipped in an afternoon, and it is the half most brands have no plan for. It is also the half that decides which of several well-formatted sources actually gets named.

So the overlap is real but lopsided. The on-page craft transfers almost completely. The off-page corroboration is the one thing SEO did not fully prepare you to do, and it is exactly the thing that turns a quotable page into a quoted one.

That is the genuinely new line item. Not new on-page technique, which you have. New off-page reach: getting written about, by name, on the independent publications the engines already read.

How do you run them as one effort?

You run a single loop, not two programs. Briefs lead with the question headings and the direct answers, then layer the keyword targeting around them. Coverage work targets publications that both pass link equity to your rankings and get cited inside AI answers, so one editorial placement does double duty. Reporting gains a quote-share panel sitting next to your rankings and snippet wins, because a ranking is not a citation and you want to watch both.

The compounding is the whole point

A single editorial placement lifts a position and adds a corroboration source. A single answer-formatted template earns snippets and quotes.

Pay once, not twice

Treat AEO as a separate budget and you pay twice for one body of authority. Treat it as SEO grown into the answer era and you pay once.

Where do AEO and SEO genuinely part ways?

Two places, and only two worth naming. Everything else is the same authority work, read by a second judge.

Measurement

SEO gives you exact click data; AEO tracking is directional, because no engine reports who it quoted the way Search Console reports who clicked. You watch quote share and brand mentions, not a precise number.

Freshness

Answer engines, retrieval-based ones especially, lean on recent material harder than classic search does, so a page untouched in two years carries a quieter weight in an answer than it does in a ranking.

You already have the hands for this.

If your pages earn featured snippets, you are most of the way to earning AI citations, because the format is the same craft under a newer name. The half you cannot finish from your own site is the corroboration that decides which well-formatted source an engine quotes. We at The Puffer build that half, placing your brand by name in the editorial publications the engines already read, then tracking both your snippet wins and your quote share so you can see the two channels move together.

Right now an engine is naming a source in your category. It just is not you yet. The deeper case for earned media as the deciding signal is laid out on our AI visibility services page.

Two more ways into this: how the same authority reads on two different scoreboards, and the running order an AEO strategy follows once you stop treating it as a second budget.

Tell us the questions your buyers ask

Send us the questions your buyers ask, and we will show you which answers you already own and which are being handed to someone else. The snippets you earned were never wasted. The engines are pulling into the harbor now, asking who to recommend, and the work you already did is the reason your name comes up. Stay buoyant.
